PCOS: The Hidden Epidemic by Samuel S. Thatcher, M.D.,
Ph.D. I just can't say enough good things about this book, to the point where I've spent two months trying to write a reasonably concise review. If you have questions about PCOS, chances are this huge (nearly 500 pages) and comprehensive volume has answers for you. From basic information (What are the signs and symptoms of PCOS? What's a cyst?) to more complex questions (How is insulin resistance related to metabolic syndrome?), there's information for newly-diagnosed women who've never heard of PCOS, those who've devoured every bit of information available on the internet, and everyone in between. There are chapters devoted to: basic PCOS information; hormones, female reproductive biology, and where things go wrong in PCOS; genetics; PCOS during puberty and adolescence and treatment options for teens; diagnosis and testing; getting appropriate care; hair and skin problems; weight problems; insulin; PCOS and body image; infertility; pregnancy; the role of estrogen; menopause; the relationship between PCOS and a host of other medical problems; taking care of yourself; treatment options; and what's ahead. An extensive glossary makes it easier to keep track of terms that might be unfamiliar, and a huge resource section includes with tips for using the internet for research, listings of both in-person and email support groups, web sites, medical organizations, and a directory of health care professionals. |

Living with PCOS by Angela Best-Boss and Evelina
Weidman Sterling with Richard S. Legro, M.D. This is a nice overview of PCOS. Although someone who's done extensive reading on the subject may not find anything new here, if you've been recently diagnosed or are feeling daunted by in-depth, jargon-filled discussions, this book provides a good introduction. Topics include symptom management, getting a diagnosis, medical and infertility treatments, alternative therapies, long-term risks, the emotional impact of the disorder, and current research. |

Problem by Theresa Cheung Good discussion of the effects of androgen disorders. Explains the hormonal changes and symptoms that go along with androgen disorder (changes in appearance such as abnormal hair growth or loss, acne and other skin problems, menstrual problems and infertility), metabolic and systemic disorders linked to androgen disorders (diabetes, weight gain, fluid retention, and hypertension among others). Prevention and self-help -- diet, exercise, stress management, skin and hair care (including hair removal), natural progesterone supplements -- and treatment -- both medical and and alternative therapies -- are also discussed. There is a brief section on PCOS, focusing on androgen involvement. If you're looking solely for PCOS information, this much can be found in more comprehensive books on PCOS, but I found it well worth the read for the information on androgen disorders in general. |

The Zone by Barry Sears, PhD This book disputes the notion that a high-carbohydrate diet is the best way to stay healthy and lose weight. It explains in detail the powerful impact insulin has on our bodies and outlines an eating plan designed to control and balance the body's insulin production and usage, allowing weight loss and reducing the risk of diseases (such as heart disease and diabetes). | |
